In the process of heating the magic sauce, my Dad walked into the kitchen and complained about the strong vinegar smell. He has a strong aversion to all things vinegar. At that point, I wondered if he would even eat the salad.

With his complaint officially registered, I had my doubts if he would make a happy plate. Would I attempt his method of parenting about food? I can almost hear me saying, “Here is a big spoonful. You can’t leave the table until your plate is clean. And Mother can’t save you.”

Can you hear the evil cackle?

I’m not sure if this glimmer into my childhood is making you cackle or not, but I’m laughing. Oddly enough even with his vinegar aversion, my Dad enjoyed the Unprocessed Candied Jalapeno Coleslaw. Pretty sure that it surprised even him.

What to do if little ones don’t want Unprocessed Candied Jalapeno Coleslaw?

My nephews also tried the coleslaw but I didn’t ask for a review. Little one manages to lick his lips on cue for photo opp. However they both enjoyed the corn pudding and caramel cake that I served along with the coleslaw. It takes time for little ones to really enjoy food unless its pizza, burgers, or sugar.

I decided to cut this salad fresh myself in lieu of processed coleslaw packages. All of the ingredients were stored in my refrigerator or pantry. If you don’t have candied jalapenos, check out this recipe from Foodie With Family.

After my D-I-V-O-R-C-E I was single for a very long time and determined to choose a better partner than the first. My Grandmother Theda Faye never liked my first husband from the beginning. She obviously knew something that I didn’t.

When my  second husband and I were dating, I introduced him to my Granny first. I wanted to make sure that he passed the Granny test.  My beau decided that he would cook a meal for  Granny and I. He wanted to butter her up so to speak. There was no opportunity to ply her with wine because my Granny rarely drank alcohol.

My beau knew he was up for Granny-scrutiny. He went all out and cooked a fabulous meal. Roast, Irish Potato Casserole and Vegetable Medley. He even made his Grandmother’s recipe, Out of this World Salad. Mrs W’s salad was far from being a salad and more like a dessert. I agree it is out-of-this-world delicious.

In the rush of preparing the meal, he worked on two dishes at the same time. In his haste, he grabbed the coarse black-pepper to use in the Irish potato casserole but instead shook it over the salad that is really a dessert. The plastic lid to the black pepper fell off and dumped the lot of black pepper into the dessert. I will allow you to form your own conclusions about which words came out after that occurred.

As all cooks know at one time or another, it all falls apart. You have to remember to stay calm. Focus on task at hand and pause to figure out the best solutions. In his case, it was a quick attempt to scoop out the black pepper, pick up where he left off and open the wine. Wine is a good problem solver at times.

He impressed my Grandmother that he could cook. He won her over for sure. Granny gave him the thumbs up. Granny knew what I know, a man who knows his way around the kitchen and grill is great find. If  you have one that washes dishes occasionally it’s even better.

In our attempt to honor my goal for losing weight and cooking healthier  this year, it was time to cook a vegetable medley. This is a method that we use often in our house as a great side dish for when you have company or  to use at multiple meals.  Wash, prepare and throw into a casserole dish until time to go in the oven.

We use fresh vegetables when we make this dish. The vegetable medley assortment is easy to  change to add in your favorites. The marriage of different fresh vegetables together is heavenly and healthy. How can you go wrong with that combo?
