This last week has been jam-packed at my house. Parents, visiting for a spell. Trying to get ready for a house filled with company. Lots of cleaning and organizing and putting the clutter away.
I grew up in a large city and loved everything that the New Orléans area had to offer. I now live in a small town. I love everything that it has to offer as well. When I visit a large city, I fall in love with the new and big flavors restaurants offer. I become infatuated and long to eat my way across the city.
Last week, my husband inadvertently shared his “virus” with me. I say inadvertently because I know that he didn’t do it on purpose. Although, it would stand to reason if you have been sick, maybe you should NOT kiss your wife. In my husband’s defense, he thought he was on the mend.
During the month of October, my mind is on my Grandmother Theda Faye more often than normal. I suppose that is common to focus on the loss of a loved one during the month of their death. Losing a loved one is a loss that we may always feel. For me, the loss is there but softened by enjoyment of our shared memories. Continue reading “Black Pepper Cabbage”
My cooking choices are often inspired by the items in the market. I prefer to cook items fresh and in season. I try to buy local when available and hope to encourage others to do so as well. This supports sustainability of our local communities.
I love, farm to table. It is amusing when you think that, farm to table is a social movement, now. How far away from common sense have we gone? The answer is, scary far. The secret is out folks, food grows on farms. What?
This week is one for the record books. My knight in shining armor came home from a business trip, very tired. Planes, trains , taxi and time zone change, add up to a lot of fun for a 6′ 6″ person. He was very happy to return home. Continue reading “Honey, Get your gun”
As a foodie, I am easily distracted and may while away an afternoon looking at cookbooks. A few of my favorite cookbooks are the really old ones. The books that were written, long before all of our fancy kitchen devices.

When people think of foods that represent Louisiana, gumbo is always at the top of the list. Learn to Make Shrimp, Sausage and Okra Gumbo like you were “born there”. As a signature dish, gumbo certainly represents the melting pot that New Orleans became famous for. The different countries that owned the territory of Orleans that eventually became Louisiana, all left their stamp in the architecture and cuisine.
Saturday is a great day to cram in, all sorts of fun activities and the “dreaded chores”. My Saturday started out well with a great cup of Costa Rican dark roast coffee with a splash of creme. I have tried to stop adding sugar to my coffee. At this point, I still want sugar. I hope that it passes soon.
